Dog Control Collars: Why Dog Electric Shock Control Collars are Inhumane

Custom Search

Some dog trainers may try to convince you that electric dog control collars are necessary to teach your dog obedience or keep it from running out into the street.

For the most part, these electric collars are little more than a power trip for owners who are unable to invest the time into properly training their dog.

To learn more about who electric dog control collars are inhumane and unnecessary, including information about more humane solutions, keep reading.

Foster Fear and Frustration

Electric shock dog collars do little more than foster fear and frustration in an animal. This then leads to anxiety and possibly dangerously high levels of aggression and stress. An animal that's afraid is often an animal that's dangerous.

Physically Harmful and Painful

Before you administer electric shocks to your dog, try holding the collar up to your own neck and shocking yourself. You'll find it's painful and upsetting and you're likely at least two to three times the size of your dog.

Electric shocks, particularly repeated electric shocks can be dangerous, causing burns, lost hair and possible mental damage.

Before you begin administering electric shocks to your pets, ask yourself if you would allow your children to wear the device? Would you wear it for an afternoon yourself?

If the answer is no, then why are you putting an electric shock collar on your dog, a hopefully beloved member of your family?

Instead, try gentler training solutions, like the ones outlined below.

More Humane Training Solutions

Instead of relaying on a shock collar every time your dog barks, try a citronella collar. These collars emit a short spray of citronella, a scent that's unpleasant and irritating for dogs. It's natural, painless and quite effective.

Another effective method for stopping unwanted behavior is the spray bottle. Every time your dog jumps up on the counter or barks at the doorbell, give him a single, quick squirt with the spray bottle. It's harmless, but it's also jarring and unpleasant and eventually the dog will stop the unwanted behavior.

The most humane training program (and the most effective) is positive reinforcement. Instead of scolding your dog every time he does something wrong, reward him when he does something right.

Every time your dog waits by the front door for you to wipe him down before he goes running into the house, praise him and pat him.

Don't wait until he does something wrong and then shock him. Eventually, your dog will associate treats and praise with good behavior – a much more human solution than electric shock dog control collars.
