Overview of the Drug
Frontline for Dogs is an over-the-counter tick and flea control medication that's designed to work within 48 hours.
It is a topical insecticide that essentially kills fleas and ticks by affecting their central nervous system, paralyzing them and killing them. Within 24 to 48 hours, the product has been absorbed into the animal's skin and hair and has killed 98 to 100 percent of the fleas and ticks on their body.
The drug kills both adult fleas and flea eggs and larvae. It's intended to protect the animal for up to 30 days, preventing future infestation.
Typical Dosage
Because Frontline is an insecticide, it is technically a poison. It is therefore extremely important to obtain the correct dosage depending on your dog's size. You can weigh your dog at home or ask your veterinarian for a dosage recommendation.
To apply the topical drug, simply squeeze the product onto the back of your dog's neck (to prevent the animal from licking the application point). Over the next 24 hours, Frontline will absorb into the oils and hair follicles of your dog, protecting him against flea infestation for up to one month.
Frontline should stay effective after bathing or swimming.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects are rare, but sometimes include skin irritation, rash and light nausea. In the case of an overdose or possible poisoning, the signs are vomiting, disorientation, seizures, agitation and signs of neural damage. If you think your dog has consumed excessive amounts of Frontline orally, get to a veterinarian immediately.
Frontline should not be given to puppies less than 8 weeks old, nor is it intended for dogs less than 10 pounds.
Cost of the Drug
A 3-pack of Frontline typically ranges in price from $40 to $50, depending on the size of the dog requiring the dosage and the retailer. A six-pack usually sells for between $70 and $90, again depending on the retailer and the dosage size.
Generic Alternatives
Frontline is essentially comprised of two drugs; fipronil, a broad insecticide and methoprene, a chemical that kills flea larvae. Generic versions of flea treatments that contain fipronil can be purchased. Ask your veterinarian for a recommendation and always buy from a certified, U.S. based supplier.
