Solar Bird Bath: Caring For Your Solar Powered Bird Bath

If you've purchased a solar bird bath, you probably want to keep it running and beautiful for a long time. Well, keep reading for a full maintenance schedule and some great tips that will keep your bath looking great and attracting birds for years to come.

Treat it With a Sealant

Before you put your solar bird bath outside, be sure to coat it with a protective sealant. Depending on the material, use the appropriate sealant. So, a concrete sealant for a concrete bath and a resin sealant for a plastic one.

The sealant will protect the finish and possible paint color on your bird bath. It will also keep it looking new, no matter what season it is.

If you're using a spray sealant, spray your bird bath from top to bottom and allow it to dry completely before you fill it with water. Otherwise, the still-damp sealant could seep into the water supply and potentially poison your feathered friends.

Create a Rough Grip Surface

Birds tend to avoid slippery surfaces. So, if you didn't purchase a sandstone or concrete bird bath, you may have to create your own grip surface. Try filling the bottom of your bird bath basin with sand, loose stones or a single layer of concrete.

Watch the Water Levels

Because solar bird baths typically use solar power to fuel a water pump that runs water from one basin to another, it's an important to keep an eye on the water levels. On a hot and windy day, you could see already low water levels evaporate completely and if there is not enough water running through the pump, it could burn out.

So, protect your bird bath by keeping an eye on the water levels during sunny and hot days. Try to check your water levels every few days, particularly during hot spells.

Clean the Bath Regularly

A clean bird bath will not only prolong the life of your bird bath, it will also keep the birds coming back. First, remove all the water that's in there.

Avoid using any harsh chemicals and instead, simply clean the bath with a good brush or your hand. If you must, use a mild dish detergent, but rinse the basin out well as birds are sensitive to soap and chemicals.

Try to wash and rinse your solar bird bath at least once a week. If the weather has been overcast or cloudy and the fountain pump hasn't been running, then you should be refilling it every few days to prevent stagnant water, algae buildup and mosquitos.
